New Lightening Detection System at SCA
We are proud to announce that Seffner Christian Academy has been blessed to be one of the first schools in the State of Florida chosen to receive a donation from the Jesse Watlington Memorial Foundation. The Foundation has purchased a WeatherBug Lightning Alerting System for our school. The system has already been installed on the South side of the cafeteria, and will be in operation starting this afternoon.
The system is manufactured by WeatherBug and it is the most advanced lightning-safety solution available. When lightning enters an unsafe range of the school, a siren will blast for 15 seconds, and will be heard on our entire school campus. Now our school has solid technology to help protect our athletes from the dangers of lightning, especially since Florida is the lightning capital of the United States. Once this siren sounds, it is mandatory for all people at our athletic facilities to seek safety in a safe structure or enclosed vehicle.
Once 30 minutes has passed from any lightning activity within our designated safe range (10 miles), the sirens will sound an "all clear" (three 5-second blasts) that will inform our coaches that it is safe to resume outdoor activities. Coaches will also be provided with web-based and mobile intellignece tools to help make safety decisions.
The Watlington family lost their 11-year old son Jesse on October 3, 2012, in Fort Myers. Jesse was struck by lightning on his school's football practice field during an after-school football practice. That is why Jesse's parents have made it their mission to donate these systems to 50 Christian schools across Florida. These initial 50 schools will be funded entirely by the Watlington's personal bank account via the Foundation. Once they accomplish this goal, their Foundation will need donations to supply the rest of the Christian schools throughout the southeast United States. If you would like to help this Foundation with supplying future schools, go to www.lightningfoundation.org to donate and learn more about Jesse and the Foundation.
